This 1968 GTO, which most any sound minded person would have scrapped, it had more rust than any scrapyard has ever seen. This beauty, basically past the point of an economical restoration, was a challenge that never stopped us. Ready to burn cash, we dug into this project hell-bent on resurrection.
As we dug into this project, caulk and rust seemed to be the only thing holding this car together. As a bit luck would have it, the frame was in pretty good shape, in comparison to the body. A bit of welding and out to power coating.
Frame is back and we are setting this ride up to run, replacing the entire suspension system (front and rear) with BMR SUSPENSION. With modern suspension and an upgraded Right Stuff Brake system, this 1968 beauty will be set up to cruise.
Time to start the rust repair on the body. The entire body including both quarters, floors, trunk pans and drops, outer wheel wells, hood, fenders, cowl and dash need extensive work. The 1968 full quarter panels and outer wheel wells were never reproduced so these pieces need to be sliced-and-diced to bring them back to life. This is going to be a challenge.
Who would of thought that the cowl and dashboard could rust so badly below the windshield. I do not know what held them in over the years. Over 20 hours needed to cut out and re-weld that mess.
The metal work is finished and fit properly. For the next few months we will be grinding, filling and sanding. Got to love it!
The original 400ci engine and original transmission have both been dropped off and are scheduled for rebuilding. The car was born Mayfair Maze (Pontiac)/Butternut yellow (GM), but were not going to let that happen again!
We're going to surprise you with the brand new paint color of this beauty.
Bottom and firewall are both being painted today, engine is near finished, and the 727 Trans is back in our shop.
Your going to have to check in for updates. But here are some spoilers:
Think: Fuel injection, custom interior by J&A Custom Interiors, a '68 Camaro Color, and best yet a Convertible.
Come back and see....
